NASCAR Rule book: Yellow section

Who knew that there is a yellow section to the NASCAR rule book?

While listening to David Poole today, I got interested in the NASCAR rule book. As you know, this is a secured book that cannot make its way into any hands not associated with a NASCAR team. (Apparently reporters can have them.) Part of Mr. Poole's frustration may be that he thinks fans know the rules of NASCAR and are just being thick in their acceptance of the rules. Heck, we didn't even know there was a yellow section for CoT. We do not know the rules, especially when the mother of all rules, Section 12-4-A is used for every infraction under the sun. Don't hate us because we are ignorant. Our ignorance is not self inflicted.

I found a web link that has taken published NASCAR rule violations and compiled them for a partial rule book. Thanks to Poole, we can add one to the list,

20-2.1 Section E: Any part or component that has been installed or modified without the permission of NASCAR officials that is designed to enhance aerodynamic performance is prohibited. (from the yellow section, as heard on Rowdy podcast 6-28-07)

North Wilkesboro Speedway

Buck and the Poet wanted us to go to North Wilkesboro Speedway. We started out taking footage from the outside and then Pete stepped up for the Rowdy Nation and got us inside. Seeing the track was both fantastic and a bit sad.

The track is still for sale for 12 million dollars.

I put the video to music because it seems to fit.

Video tour of Evernham Motorsports

We were sent to Evernham by Lauren. Remember, if you would like us to go to a race shop or other NASCAR location, just add a comment and we will try to go.

EMS does not have a large museum area like some of the other shops. It is around 60 by 60 feet and also houses the store. There are about 3 cars in the room. There is also a long window to view the shop area of the #9 and #19.

On this trip, Andy's friend Jordan went along. Jordon's Uncle Ben works on the #10 car.

Uncle Ben was nice enough to take us for a shop tour during lunch. We were hoping to take him to Jay Bee's, a hot dog stand extraordinaire, but we did not have enough time to do both.

Hope that you enjoy,
Jana

You Sent Us to Roush.

Here is the first video blog of a North Carolina racing site. Susie and Becky wanted us to go to Roush in Concord NC, so off we went. We refer to Becky and Susie on the video and what we think that they would like to see in the shop. We also have some Biff stuff in there for Bass. Andy, my son, was the director and whispered in my ear what was coming up in the tour, so this was a team effort. There are two videos, one is of the museum and a short one of the race shop. There are also some photos uploaded in the photo blog area of this page.

I do have a couple of disclaimers. I took the video with my regular digital still camera so I was not able to edit. Since then, we have purchased a MiniDV camcorder and that format is suppose to be the easiest to edit. The second is that I have consulted with Denis, our Rowdy friend from ESPN, as to what microphone we should get, so we should have an upgrade there too.

Please add where you would like us to visit. We would be happy to try.

COT pictures taken at Bristol qualifying

Hello, Rowdy Nation. I have more qualifying photos posted in the photos section under blog pictures. (We have to remember to call it Car of Today - COT)

Pete, Andy & I went to morning cup practice. We then ate track food and met Lisa from the Rowdy Nation. And finally, we watched the qualifying in great Bristol sunshine. I hope that you enjoy the photos.

North Wilkesboro Speedway today.

We went on a field trip to North Wilkesboro Speedway today. We took some pictures and share them with you here and in the photo area. Could not get real close, so these were taken with a zoom lens.

As you can see, time has not been kind to the speedway. We did see a "Speedway for Sale" sign on the grandstand. So I was wondering, what are the numbers behind this sale.

In 1996 the track was sold by one of the partners to Bruton Smith for $6 million and the other half to Bob Bahre for $8 million by the other partner. It was widely know at the time that Smith thought that he could buy the second partner out, but they did not want to sell to Smith.

North Wilkesboro Speedway was a track that was used in NASCAR since its inception. It had the unique characteristic of an uphill climb in the backstretch, and downhill in the front stretch. The last race was run there in 1996, since the race dates were then moved by the new owners. Bahre moved his race date to New Hampshire and Smith moved his to Texas. The track has had extremely limited use since then. Jack Roush used it with his driving gong show.

Now Smith has announced that the track is for sale, for $12 million dollars. The property is on the tax role for $4.83 million. For more information I give this link to a Winston Salem article.

http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1149192860436&path=%21sports&s=1037645509200

The track sits vacant. The race dates cost $6 and 8 million dollars. Are public funds needed to build new tracks when there are already not enough race dates? As you can see with the North Wilkesboro track, owners are willing to pay for the race date and leave the track to rot.

Final lap caution, could a muli-car team game the

Hello Rowdy Nation,

I went off the mountain today to Sam's Club in Hickory so I listened to the Rowdy pod cast in my car and got caught up. I did not see Dale Jarrett in the Hickory Sam's Club, his pantry must be already be full. (-:

A thought occurred to me as I listened to the discussion regarding if a caution should or should not be thrown in the final lap. It seems that a multi-car team could game the system, if it was known that the caution would be thrown in the event of a final lap accident. For example, on the final lap, team Alpha has a car in first, fourth, fifteenth, and twenty-second. A car from team Beta is catching the first car, so the Alpha team's twenty-second car boots the car in front of him to cause a spin out, he could then drive on by. The yellow flag is thrown, the field is frozen, and a win is scored for Alpha team.

I am not saying that the yellow flag should not be thrown if there is an accident in the final lap. I am just pointing out how a multi-car team could assure an outcome. I hope that I am not too tardy with my comments and this was already discussed. A thousand pardons in advance if this is so.

Bye, Jana

Book report on Driving with the Devil

I am polishing off my grade school skills and writing a book report on Driving with the Devil: Southern Moonshine, Detroit Wheels and the Birth of NASCAR by Neal Thompson. This book came to my attention by Millie Payne, my parent's neighbor in Michigan. She does not follow auto racing, but was fascinated by an author interview she heard on the radio.

My Dad sent me the book in one of those great Amazon box deliveries. To top things off, Neal Thompson came to our university to give a book talk. Now I was locked and loaded and ready to read this book.

It was not a quick read as it is jam packed with historical information. He tells about how moonshine came to this country and how it was transported. That led to racing on Sunday afternoons, one of the only days off from running "'shine."

Main characters are early racers Red Byron, Raymond Parks, Bill France and Roy Hall. Mechanic Red Vogt is also prominent as a wizard with the wrench. The author weaves stories around these men and ultimately tells the story of early stock car racing.

There are also details on the formation of NASCAR and competition among other sanctioning bodies of auto racing. Talk about cut throat, early racers had to weigh getting paid, against discipline actions if they raced in competing circuits.

During the book talk, someone asked Neal Thompson if the France family was aware of the book. He said that he tried several times during the several years of writing the book to interview someone from the family. They never agreed to an interview, but they are aware of the book.

I did like the book. It would appeal to people who like NASCAR and people like Millie Payne who like a good story.

Bye Jana
