Despite the pressure from the drivers and the TV commentators, NASCAR once again showed that it has its head in the sand. NASCAR president Mike Helton told Mike Harris of the Associated Press that the sanctioning body’s drug testing policy of only going after a driver if there is "reasonable suspicion" has worked well in the past and there is really no reason to change that policy now or in the foreseeable future.
It must be wonderful to be perfect. As Despain pointed out, Fike sure slipped through the cracks this time and who knows how many other race drivers, crew chiefs, pit crew members, mechanics or truck drivers might be wired on alcohol or drugs?
It’s scary when a guy like Speed TV’s Jeff Hammond, who said on the air Saturday that he owned a piece of the team that Fike drove for, revealed that he had "no idea" his driver had a problem

Police review accident involving Brian France
JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRE REPORT
• Police were investigating whether Brian France, NASCAR's CEO, got special treatment from authorities after
crashing his car into a tree in a Daytona Beach, Fla., parking lot this week.
A police report said that France, 44, told an officer who was later called to his home that he was drinking a soda
and "bumped into something" after entering a restaurant parking lot.
A woman who had called 911 from her car to report a wild driver told police in a statement that she saw
France's car travel at a "very reckless speed," and that it hit a parked car before running into the tree.
She said she then watched France's car travel toward a nearby parking garage at France's condominium and
that the man who got out "fell over his own feet."
The woman's statement wasn't attached to the police report. Police Chief Mike Chitwood said yesterday that
officers turned in the witness statement a day after filing the report; he said that has been a common problem at
the department.
Hmmmmmmm! I'll bet even money that nothing comes of this and it disappears...well, after Mr. France pays restitution and everything, anyway. Any takers? I wonder what Mr. Hammond and Larry Mac think about this one. I am simply amazed that this didn't get more press than it did. In fact, had I not stumbled onto it by accident, it might have gone totally unnoticed. Oh, well. It's news, now!
