well after the limitations on the toyota engines, kyle busch still lead a heart-dropping 197 of 200 laps, so i think all of us have to finally admit that kyle busch is a great driver, he has won a ton of races this season and i think part of it is his equipment but i think the bigger part is this kid has talent, he has definately matured as a race car driver, if you look at most of the tracks he's racing on, especially infineon, his line is flawless! so there is no way this could all be just the equipment although good equipment never hurts, kyle is a great driver
I am getting tired of everyone saying it is the toyotas that are winning all of the races, that is not true at all. it is JOE GIBBS RACING!! and more specifically KYLE BUSCH!!!, there hasn't been a toyota win in the nationwide or cup series' that hasn't been joe gibbs or kyle busch. In the cup series, all though it is joe gibbs winning the races, kyle busch is winning almost all of them, Denny Hamlin has won one race, Tony Stewart has yet to win a race. Kyle Busch has won 7.
other than joe gibbs racing there is only one toyota driver that is even doing well in the cup series, and that is brian vickers. He has been running pretty consistantly but still has yet to win, it is only joe gibbs that is in the chase right now of the toyota teams, although brian vickers should make the cut. michael waltrip racing is struggling to stay in the top 35 let alone to win a race or even stay on the lead lap. Bill Davis Racing is running well enough to keep them in the 20's but they aren't running well in any respect. being a toyota team is not an advantage, being in joe gibbs is.
I had already called this on jayski, but i knew that marcos would get the full time ride after his performance at sonoma
DEI!
First off, Teresa Earnhardt is looking to sell, and she had better do it quick because pretty soon it will be known that DEI will be a 2 car team next year unless they can find some drivers fast. here's why
Martin Truex, Jr. won't give any details on if he is staying or going, and that usually means that the driver is looking, but doesn't want everyone watching. I believe he will go to the Childress 33 car, because it wouldn't be a very large adjustment period, and richard childress has a tendency of scouting drivers from DEI, i know he was willing to start a fourth team for the 2008 season if Dale Earnhardt, jr. was going to join his team. Martin wants to stay with chevy and has proven he can run well in good equipment, and if he goes to childress he will be a chase driver.
Paul Menard is looking to leave DEI as well although he isn't really hot product, but he is a good cantidate for teams like yates, waltrip, petty and so on, I believe he will be in the yates 36 car next season, and his dad's company might follow him there, depending on what their situation is with DEI
if those two pieces fall into place, DEI is putting their team on the shoulders of Regan Smith, and Aric Almirola. not a very good situation to be in if you ask me, now granted these two might keep them in the top 35, but they certainly won't be winning and they won't be in the chase.
so far their sponsor situation for those two is looking like Hard rock cafe and maybe principal financial group. again not the situation you want to be in.
if someone is going to buy the team, they had better have a golden plan.
so right now the lineup is looking like
01: Smith 8: Almirola
here is my prediction going into the chase
1. Ky. Busch
2. Earnhardt, Jr.
3. Edwards
4. Johnson
5. Gordon
6. Burton
7. Kenseth
8. Stewart
9. Biffle
10. Kahne
11. Harvick
12. Vickers
Michael Waltrip Racing
Next season will be particularly interesting for this team because it will be it's third year and they will already have none of the drivers they started out with driving the car those drivers were david reuttimann, dale jarrett, and michael waltrip.
now here's why i think that they will not have david reuttimann and michael waltrip driving next season.
first off Michael Waltrip has had all of the success as a driver taht he will ever have, there won't be any wins in the future for him, so realizing that i think he will start focusing more on the management side of things and step out of the 55 car.
David Reuttimann will be losing UPS as a sponsor next season, and will be looking for a better ride, because if the engines that they could be getting from trd right now arent helping those cars, i think he will want a brighter pasture, enter petty enterprises, now you are probably thinking what a total moron, look at how they are running right now. well bobby labonte is 19th in points, and he's doing it in less than sufficient equipment. Boston Ventures recently bought into the team, that will give them more funding for better equipment. kyle petty is stepping out of the 45 car and i think david reuttimann will jump into it seeing the opportunity at hand.
now that leaves michael waltrip with one less than sufficient driver, Michael McDowell who isn't even in the top 35 in points.
if michael waltrip will hire a driver like that than they will jump for an opportunity to hire a better one.
enter casey mears and jason leffler, now earlier i predicted that bill davis racing will merge with michael waltrip racing and they will have the money to get a few sponsors and jason leffler.
casey mears will be looking for a ride next season and i don't think richard childress and roger penske will be jumping to get mears in either of their cars. but michael waltrip will.
now jason leffler is a guy who has impressed many, who is already in a toyota team, and that team isn't competing in the cup series so there is no owner conflict, infact it is almost like owner agreement because of TRD. and he will certainly run better than the dubie
so here's what i think the lineup will be
00: Michael McDowell 22: Jason Leffler 44: Casey Mears
Penske Racing
Well with Ryan Newman leaving the twelve car penske will have to find a new driver, that driver has to be david stremme, there is just simply no other option that makes sense.
Ganassi Racing
They need to merge with someone or have a major company buy into the team, and find a good replacement for reed sorensen if he does leave or is fired, i think they should look into the truck series for some veteren blood and since the trucks are so close to the setup of the COT there shouldn't be too much time taken to adjust like you see with some of these young guns from the nationwide series. perhaps Dennis Setzer would be a good cantidate if they want to look for a driver that is involved with dodge already. if not Matt Crafton would be a good catch
i want to talk about yates racing (or roush the sequel)
now i think jack roush is very power hungry and will make yates a 4-car team. he will make jamie mcmurray's departure casual and partial by keeping him in the 26 car but moving that car to yates. the driver of the 36 car will be paul menard. He is looking for a way out of DEI and it is very likely that he will want to be in roush equipment and yates will be the closest thing so he will stick with them.
since yates has proven they can run better than alot of teams with wealthy sponsors i think they will have no problem getting sponsored. and i think it very likely the army will be on a yates car next season.
so for yates in 2009 i think it will be
26: McMurray 28: Kvapil 36: Menard 38: Gilliland
Richard Childress 33 car
the driver that i believe is atop the list for that car is Martin Truex Jr.
I believe that Martin has shown he can run well in good equipment, he is a young guy which is just what childress needs, and he is about the same class of driver as the other three. now childress' relationship with DEI would definately help Martin's chances to get into that car.
now the reason i didnt pick the more likely drivers is this
ryan newman is pretty much guaranteed to go to the 13 car for stewart haas racing and if not he will go to joe gibbs. Jamie Mcmurray i believe will go to the soon to be four car yates racing (the other driver being paul menard) because he definately doesnt want to go far from roush and jack roush wants more power. now tony stewart would have been a shoe in for that car if he wasnt looking for ownership, given his history with the 33 khi car in the busch series, and because he is great friends with kevin harvick. Mark Martin could have gone to that car but hendrick was just a better deal. now there could be another option and that is brad keselowski, but i think he wants to stay close to hendrick, get one more year of nationwide experience, and wait for the 5 car.
here's the lineup
07: Bowyer 29: Harvick 31: Burton 33: Truex
periodically i will be posting blogs on what i think will happen in 2009 as far as driver and team changes.
today i will be focusing on bill davis racing. Now the way i see it they only have one option MERGE! now the way they go about it could be a few different things.
the most reasonable in my mind is to combine with michael waltrip racing because bill davis has always been good at finding sponsors and michael waltrip needs some. and it doesnt hurt that bill davis has more of the repetative digits going on since michael waltrip seems to like those. the driver for the 22 michael waltrip racing car would have to be jason leffler because hes showing some talent in the nationwide series and he could definately run better than the dubie. I also have Scott Riggs replacing David Reuttimann in the 44 because he is another guy that will keep them in the top 35 and again will run better than the dubie.
Second option is to merge with hall of fame racing and strenghten another one car team and possibly make it two cars i think JJ Yeley would stay in the 96 and either scott riggs or jason leffler for the 22
they could potentially merge with red bull racing and just strengthen their equipment. I do not belive that doing this would bring a third car like 85 or something because i think the driver market is growing slim, they wont put the funding into it and red bull cans only have two colors, silver and blue!
now there is a fourth, and highly unlikely option. and that is to merge with joe gibbs racing. now that probably wouldnt mean making it a four car team although it would make that option easier. i think it would just bring more money to both bill davis and joe gibbs.
If I am right the lineup for MWR will be:
00: McDowell 22: Leffler 44: Riggs
