ESPN reports that Penske will not re-sign Ryan Newman in 2009. Penske probably just wanted to cut the tie with Ryan before he could do it himself. It would look bad for Penske if Ryan said goodbye to them first. So, they to beat him to the punch.

NASCAR teams are so bad at keeping anything secret before it happens. The Stewart Haas thing with Newman coming over has been the established rumour de jour for months now. Finally, it's actually happening. I'm now shocked with the established rumor doesn't take place.
...it's funny. If Ryan weren't planning to leave, what would Penske's logic be for releasing Newman? "Oh, all he did was win the Daytona 500 for us"...
Sheesh.
X:)
If Ryan misses the chase, I wonder if he gets in a Haas car before the year is over and Penski gets his new driver in the 12? Just an idea.
...Wester, I was thinking that for Tony, but Ryan is even a MORE likely candidate for an early swap now that you mention it...
I have started wondering if anybody in the history of the world has ever left a Penske team on their own (excluding retirement), in any racing series.
