Bet on Lagano and Truex

Now that we know that Smoke is going to Haas/CNC in some ownership fashion.... (reported first by Rowdy's own super-sleuth: Don Runkle.) ...

Sources say that Lagano will run the 20 car next year and that Truex will be Smoke's teammate provided he can wiggle out of his DEI contract.

This does make the most sense. Home Depot has got to be itching to sign Lagano the vunderkid. Any guy that wins his third Nationwide race makes sponsors all giddy. And, given his backers, Mark Martin, Bobby Allison and of course, JD, you have to believe they will snap this kid up. Good decision? It's a marketing decision so we'll see. Probably. I think so, but call Casey Atwood.

As for Ryan Newman vs. Truex ....why would Newman go to a new team with Tony as his boss? Given that he would, in the end, have to answer to Tony and work through obvious start up snafus, the only reason Ryan would do it would be for a boat load of cash. I think Ryan wants to win right now more than he wants money.

Truex? His team is not exactly lighting the world on fire and he would let Tony serve as his mentor. I see these two getting along far better than Ryan and Smoke. The only thing stopping Truex is his contract with DEI. And don't think Chevy doesn't care about Truex. Chevy rewards/buys loyalty. Just ask Tony.

Do you see Newman going to JGR to fill out the team to four?

Good Question. I don't know if Gibbs has the fourth sponsor. If I was a betting man I see Ryan over at Childress. But, Childress is a wild card. I think he may be thinking outside the box.

I kinda thought of Martin in the 5 car with Dale Jr over there now ... but if I were Tony, out of the "free" drivers, I would want Martin also.

JR Motorsports moving to Cup may be a wild card, too. According to ESPN, in an interview yesterday Dale Jr. got testy when asked about that possibility. Either he's tired of being asked, or he is hiding something.

If I were a car owner with an open seat, I would be trying to steal Montoya.

When I said Martin, BTW, I meant JR :) Not the old Martin ... although that would fit too.

According to Scene Daily Smoke is showing some interest in the # 5 car at Hendrick. Wouldn't that be great? I'd like to see JR motorsports go cup. I think they'd be good contenders. They seem to be doing well in the Nationwide.

Whichever the case with Newman, this also means that the #12 would be open. The names of Penske and Mears have a familiar ring, don't they?

X:)

Well, if Truex goes to Smoke's team, DEI certainly isn't setting thw world on fire. I don't think they can afford a top-tier driver so I'm thinking Mears slides in to the 01. Don't think it'll work long-term but I think it's a possibility.
