Each year Coach Horton and a committee of 5 members review and evaluate the best pit crewmen on pit road. There are three catogories: All Pro
Veteran Ranking and Up & Coming. The List is ATC TM's way of recognizing the best on pit road, Give these guys a big hand because they have done a tremendous job all year and they are among some of the best athletes in motorsports.
It has been two races since Michael took his wild ride at Texas Motor Speedway. Michael completed both the Texas and Phoenix races with out a glitch. Michael sustained minor contusions on his left foot and ankle and is currently being treated by motorsports Athletic Trainer / Pit Crew Coach, Phil Horton. Horton began treatment and rehabilitation on Michael the day after the crash, and accompanied Michael to Phoenix this past Tuesday to help him through his busy day at LUKE AIR FORCE BASE and his flight in an F 16 Jet fighter. "Michael performed well and made it through the flight without throwing up stated Horton, most people who go through this program end up, up chucking on themselves during the flight which consist of loops and turns at mach 1 and 9 plus G forces placed on the body " Michael will get a week off from his busy schedule and should be 100% for Talladega and the high banks later in the month.
Todd Bodine takes the first truck race at Daytona. The #30 pit - crew performs a great pit stop and helps Todd get out first. Coach Horton stated that the crew had a good day considering it was the first race but still needs to workout the little things to get better.
" I am proud of their effort and I feel that we will continue to improve as the season goes along" stated Coach Horton.
Crew Chief Paul Andrews get's a two day rest to heal from injuries suffered last fall as his driver Michael Waltrip captures the outside pole for Sunday's DAYTONA 500. Paul and I first met when I served as his pit crew coach at Akins Motorsports / Great Clips / Kasey Kahne entry. As his Athletic Trainer now, I can state that Paul is a very hard worker in the shop and in the gym and I am proud to be a part of his and the Michael Waltrip Racing 08 season.
WHEN DALE JARRETT STEPS DOWN AFTER THE FIRST FIVE RACES IT WILL MARK THE END OF A CAREER FOR ONE OF NASCAR'S GREATIST DRIVERS. AS DALE'S PIT CREW COACH FOR THREE SEASONS I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH 5 OF DALE'S WINS IN THAT THREE YEAR SPAN. ONE OF HIS WINS THAT STICKS OUT IN MY MEMORIES THE MOST WAS THE JUNE 9TH 2002 WIN AT POCONO. I SAW MY FIRST RACE AS A 14 YEAR OLD IN 1973 AT POCONO AND AS YOU CAN IMAGINE IT RAINED THAT DAY AS WELL. IT WAS AN INDY CAR RACE WON BY AJ FOYT . I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD GO BACK TO POCONO AGAIN, NEVER THE LESS GO TO VICTORY LANE WITH DALE JARRETT. AS A NATIVE OF LENOIR, NC I GREW UP AN AVID NASCAR FAN AND WATCHED DALE'S RISE TO STARDOM. WHEN HE FINALLY STEPS DOWN I FOR ONE WILL MISS HIS PRESENCE ON THE TRACK AND I AM PROUD TO HAVE BEEN A WITNESS TO HIS LEGACY. - COACH HORTON
