How Stuff Works?

Rowdy Nation

We are doing a deal with Howstuffworks.com whereby they post NASCAR relevant articles on rowdy.com. Their articles are amazingly informative and a pretty good read. They cover almost any topic you can think of, and that's where the Nation comes in here. Are there articles you want "How Stuff Works" to post on Rowdy? What NASCAR subjects do you think should be further explained? Are there technical race car questions you'd like them to cover? This a great way for Rowdy to give you guys more and more insight into the sport.

Sweet, howstuffworks is already a daily site for me. Now I gotta put together a list.

1. Bump Stops
2. Daytona 500 Qualifying
3. How the field is set after qualifying is rained out
-in the 1st 5 races
-after the 1st 5 races
4. Scoring loops
5. In car data
6. In car cameras (where they are mounted, does everyone get a mount and only some get cameras, etc)
7. Wedge
8. Camber
9. 7 post shaker
10. Digger
11. Point system
12. The Chase
13. Kyle Busch's sunglasses
14. pit passes (and how to get them)
15. COT
16. Safer Barriers

And most importantly...
17. How the Martinsville Hot Dog works?

That's it for now. Obviously a lot of us understand some of those, but for a newbie it could be a great resource.

I would like to know exactly how Cup race restarts work...

Like when lapped cars start in front of the leaders sometimes and not always (until 10 laps to go?)....single-file vs double-file restarts, etc.

Also, why are restarts different for some races, i. e., Daytona 125s, etc. where the restarts are double-file even at the end of the race?

Hey Buck, I could see the Rowdy Nation answering some of these questions too!

Wes mentioned telemetry; I know NASCAR forbids teams from using that information but it's available via NASCAR.com and DirecTv hotpass. Can't the teams just fire up the computer and look at the information just like the rest of us?

What the heck is a bump stop? Does DW cut his own hair w/ one of those flowbee/vacuum machines?

Susie - I like your idea about the restarts. It would be nice to know what goes into restarts and determining the different restarts.

A couple other things I thought of are:
-How do teams get their information about the car and what might be wrong with it, what the driver might need to do during the race, etc? Is there a cable in the car that senses what might be wrong and then feeds it to the teams or is there something else of how teams get their information?
-How does in car audio work between the driver, spotter, crew chief, etc?

Telemetry is totally different then what is at NASCAR.com during a race. Telemetry that is on cars during testing, can give tire temps, air pressure, the amount shocks moves, and different heat and pressures that the motor goes through, and other things that you cant even think of, lol

What they look at in post race inspection. Does it differ from other inspections? What parts do they focus on?

Wes, I could tell you how Kyle's sunglasses work... but then I'd have to kill you.
