So what can we expect out of the Auto Club 500 this weekend? Well, there are quite a few teams that need to get the lead out. Not only out of their gas, which NASCAR is switching to unleaded fuel this weekend, but out of their...Well, you know what I mean. Red Bull Racing has been sitting on the sidelines since the start of the season with both of their race teams, so they will be itching to make the race. Can any of the Toyota's make the race? I think so. But, I would be willing to bet that some of the Toyota teams are going to be making the long drive back to Mooresville long before the race starts. Which team or teams is it going to be? Qualifying will be interesting. According to NASCAR.com, 51 drivers are slated to try out for the 43 slots available. Will the unleaded fuel be a factor in qualifying and the race? Most likely not. The only cars that have not been on the track with unleaded fuel for a race have been the Toyota's though. Without the lead in the fuel, more wear can be expected on an engine during qualifying and a race, but most teams have done their homework in this area. Drivers in the most danger of not making the race; Michael Waltrip, A.J. Allmendinger, Jeremy Mayfield, David Reutimann, Brian Vickers, Kenny Wallace, Bill Elliott, Ward Burton, and Brandon Whitt.
What else can we expect? I would also expect those who didn't get a great finish in the Daytona 500 to push hard to get the first good finish of the year under their belts to get the points. Tony, Jimmy, Junior, Kurt, Kyle, just to name a few. With the driving style of aforementioned, things could get hairy if they really get up on the wheel. And with the Toyota entering the ranks this year, the top 35 is more important than it has been in several years. No longer can you afford to let a couple of races slip by with poor finishes, otherwise you will find yourself having to race your way in on time.
This track will also be a great test for the new Dodge nose this year. Historically, this has been a Ford track, but the Dodge's have been gaining ground on these types of tracks and the new nose could be enough to push them to be at least as good as the Chevy's and the Fords. Qualifying will give some indication as to who will be running well on Sunday and who won't be.
