NASCAR has announced an internal investigation to try and determine the source of a widespread rumor. The sanctioning body released this official statement:
“It has come to our attention that many people within the NASCAR community, as well our fans worldwide, were under the impression that the annual ‘Allstate 400 at the Brickyard’ was held yesterday and that Jimmie Johnson was the victor. This could not be further from the truth. While we did have a large contingent of drivers and officials at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday, their presence was required for a rare 43-car test session. Why 250,000 people chose to attend that session is, quite frankly, beyond us.”
When pressed for more information regarding the nature of the test, NASCAR spokesperson, Ramsey Poston explained, “It was a tire test – definitely not a race. While the outcome of that test was inconclusive, we will be running Hoosiers at Pocono. This is not to say we have been unhappy with the Goodyear Racing Eagles. We simply want to spread the love.”
Jimmie Johnson’s reaction was what one might expect. The two time defending champion said, “The Lowe’s Chevrolet Impala was really strong during this 160 lap test session. I’d like to thank everyone back at the Hendrick Motor Sports engine shop as well as Chad and all my guys, for giving me such a good piece. We’ve struggled a little in testing this year, but I think our performance today proves that the 48 team is back in top test form.” Johnson’s wife Chandra stood to the side with tears in her eyes as Jimmie accepted a congratulatory hug from teammate and owner Jeff Gordon. Gordon declared yesterday’s garage-wide test session “Awesome!” and expressed hope that NASCAR schedules more such tests in the future.

roflmao I think that about covered it much more of these test sessions and I will sit on my porch and watch traffic go by more entertaining
Looks like NASCAR's gag order on the teams and drivers is working...I appreciate Brian Vickers' comments after his day ended; he didn't want to point fingers but apologized to the fans and called the "test session" an embarrassment. I think Carl felt the same way...
TESTCAR should have let the guys run the last 20 without a competition caution; at least there would have been more drama for the 43 "best" drivers in the world...
I'm all for safety for the drivers, but maybe they should have tried the Pocono tires during the middle of the race to see if they held up better.
I have to share this. I was just reading post-race quotes, and came across this gem from NASCAR:
"With teams clearly responding to the challenges presented by tire wear during Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the race produced a solid increase in green-flag passing compared to last year.
There may have been a record number of caution laps for the race, 52. But the green-flag passing numbers, gathered by NASCAR’s Loop Data, showed a total of 1,545 green-flag passes during Sunday’s event, up from 1,431 during last year’s Indy race – a difference of 114 passes."
That is the definition of spin control. Too bad for them, most fans are well-aware of their tactics.
The response of several of the drivers that NASCAR is doing all they can is the part that really shows how powerful NASCAR is. NASCAR is even controlling the driver's reaction. Where can we see or hear what the drivers really think about Sunday's fiasco?
While eating breakfast this morning, I worked on the daily crossword in the newspaper. The clue for 1-Down was "Indy events." The word "RACES" fit, but that can't be right.
For NASCAR to go a race track as prestigious as Indy and not be totally prepared to put on a great...not good race is inexcusable. With falling TV ratings and with the economy in shables.....why would I pay my hard earned money to go to any race.........Get your act together or you'll end up with nobody in the stands and a TV rating thats lower than arena football.
NASCAR can say they are sorry till there blue in the face but it won't make me spend my hard earned money to a association that can't produce a product that is hit or miss at best.
