Team 187 had another enjoyable and energetic weekend! Racer motored his Daimler along the road course of Schenley Park on Saturday and Sunday. His first practice on Saturday went well, but with the high heat and several incidents on the course prior to Racer's time out on the track, the surface was very slick making the Damiler difficult to maneuver gracefully. At the driver's meeting on Saturday after all groups had been out once, the event chairman had to share his outrage at the driving style of those who were out for blood. As you may recall, the VSCCA is a non-points, non-purse, non-awards racing group. It is all about the cars and not the driver's prowess. The talk seemed to tame the racers and the afternoon session went quite well. Racer was once again pleased with the Daimler's performance and qualified 9th in the field of 28.
Sunday was another hot and sticky day. Rain fell as we ate an early morning breakfast but had cleared by the time we arrived at the paddock. Morning practice again went well for Racer and he was feeling good. A hearty lunch, another driver's meeting, and a driver's photo of all who attended to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the VSCCA was followed by a long wait until Racer's group raced. As we waited at the paddock an announcement came through the loudspeakers that a rain storm was approaching. We quickly jumped to get the camp broken down and the trailer on the tow vehicle ready to accept the Daimler when she got off the track. When the storm passed Racer's group was called to the grid. An 8 lap race was run with a 9th lap cool down to thank the corner workers and fans who came out to watch. Racer's video should showcase his drive in the rain. I know from talking to him that the people of Pittsburgh who attend this race always cheer for Racer because he gives them a great show. Well, this time our club agreed with the crowd! As Racer brought the Daimler back to the Start/Finish line at the end of the race, our club president was waiting for him, stopped him, and handed him a checkered flag with the PVGP insignia on it! Although he didn't win the race, this indicates that Racer earned the award for "Best Drive in Show" for his group. Racer couldn't have been more proud - he was beaming, and we, Team 187, cheered loudly for him when he came back into the paddock waving his flag!
We packed up the rest of our gear, Racer tied the car down to the trailer, and we headed back home. Our race weekend was another success for Team 187. Thank you to all of you who offered your Rowdy Support. It means so much to all of us!!
Just out of curiosity, since this is a non-competitive event, what constitutes "best drive in show"? What are the criteria used to determine the recipient of that award?
Great job Team 187! That's sounds like so much fun. Too bad I'm all the way down here in Florida because I would love to come see you all in action. For now, the videos will do... (Although a video of Chief & Co. hurridly breaking down the campsite before the storm would probably be pretty entertaining as well)...
The VSCCA is the guest club of the PVGP for the event. At pure VSCCA events there are no prizes or trophies. At the PVGP there are trophies for first through third and the event chairpersons choose a "Best Drive" award for each class. I won the "Best Drive" award for Group 5, Over Two Liter.
Great blog, I felt like I was there in the three rivers area. We look forward to seeing the video. I also agree with Racer X, we want to see Chief & Co. do a quick camp breakdown on video when you go to Lime Rock.
Congrats.....I always enjoy reading your blogs about the races. Sounds so very exciting. Way to go Racer 187!!!!
