Jayski is reporting
Sam Hornish Jr. said Tuesday that nobody has spoken to him about moving from Penske Racing's #77 Dodge to replace the departing #12-Ryan Newman next season, and that he has no idea who will ultimately end up in the ride. Sources close to the situation continue to tell Sirius Speedway that David Stremme is the leading candidate for the ride, but whether or not those sources are correct, it seems likely that Stremme will find his way back to the Sprint Cup ranks next season, one way or another. Stremme has turned down a number of offers to return to the Sprint Cup Series this season -- holding out for a ride that he feels is capable of running up front -- while serving as a test driver for Penske Racing. I [Dave Moody] believe that Stremme may have already received a commitment from Roger Penske for a full-time Cup ride in 2009.
On a side note I reported Stremme going to Penske on July 15th on my blog.
Here's Jenna Fryer's rationale why Stremme will take the Penske ride:
"With Newman's seat available, that could be filled by David Stremme. Out of the Cup Series all season, Stremme smartly declined opportunities to get in sub-par seats, a decision that landed him a deal as Penske's test driver this spring.
When Dario Franchitti broke his foot, opening up Stremme's old seat at Ganassi, he was unable to secure permission to fill in beyond a one-race emergency substitution. It raised questions about what kind of contract Stremme had agreed to with Penske.
Why would a guy in search of a full-time Cup ride agree to a test contract that didn't have an out if a seat became available? Because he already had a job lined up, of course."
Makes sense Archidude. Sorta like Mark Martin drvin part time for Jr Motorsports this year and now he's in the #5 car next year.
Sounds good, but my question for Penske is this: Can David Stremme land you a sponsor? The guy is a Cup level driver, no doubt, but when Alltel's merger reality comes into play, that #12 car will need some logos on it and I wonder if Penske can sell Stremme's sizzle...
For the 12, I first thought about Casey Mears because of the family connections, or Martin Truex Jr. because that's who Penske originally wanted for the 2 ride before he got Kurt. But Stremme makes sense, especially if you consider the Rusty Wallace and Penske link. I think Rusty was in Roger's ear about Stremme and Cup when that test driver deal developed.
On the sponsor thing, Penske obviously wants some help to cover the bills, but I recall him saying a month or two ago when the Verizon/Alltel deal happened that he has the resources to run a car without full-time sponsorship if necessary. Must be nice to have that much money.
