The Ultimate Driver

Over the past couple of weeks, there have been several glowing blogs about Dale Earnhardt Jr. Most of us have been real positive on the man, if not the "Nation" that stands behind him. It's hard, nearly impossible really, to find a race fan who doesn't respect or admire the guy personally.

On the other end, there have been no shortage of blog entries praising Kyle Busch the driver. Even those who can't STAND the guy have had to admit that he is a special talent behind the wheel, able to do things with a race car that few can. He is undoubtably a member of the handful of truly elite drivers in the field.

So, like Dr. Frankenstein, what would happen if you combined these two together into some weird hybrid where the positives of each were brought to the forefront? Sounds to me as if you'd have the ultimate NASCAR driver.

We do. And his name is Carl Edwards.

As a wheelman and a personality, Cousin Carl is the pinnacle of the sport. He can do things with a car few can, he truly is worth his weight in horsepower. He's also one cool cat, as comfortable running a record company as he is doing backflips after a win. And those backflips: Is there any more spectacular celebration in sports?

Like Busch, he yearns to win. Give him 2 tires verses the fields 4 with the checkerd in sight, and he'll make it into victory lane. He'll do his trademark backflip, stick the landing (on asphalt, too, as we found on Saturday night), give a great interview and charm the heck out of you, fan or not.

Like Junior, it's nearly impossible not to like the guy. As is my formula for understanding true superstars, it usually boils down to this: Guys want to be him, girls want to be with him. Sounds like Edwards to me.

As a last point, Carl is really in a great position to make history. Again he is lining himself up to pull off his own little "double" by winning the Nationwide and Sprint Cup titles in the same year. And if anyone can pull it off, it is Carl.

X:)

I wonder if Kenseth fans agree that "it's nearly impossible not to like the guy"?

Cutler, there are Kenseth fans that like Carl. Also, Carl and Matt seem to be getting along rather well now. A side note to his victory on Saturday ... he has a fan website like many other drivers and they happened to have a getogether at Gateway ... he invited them all to victory lane to have their picture taken with him.

I think if you combined Kyle and Dale Jr you'd have Tony Stewart. I like Carl Edwards but I don't think he is quite the combination of those two, now Smoke on the other hand has the don't take no crap attitude of Kyle and the charm and yearn to be successful like Junior.

I don't think cousin Carl is quite as happy go lucky as he trys to come off. He usually does a pretty good job of hiding it, but every once in a while he slips up and roid rage Carl makes an appearance. Threatening physical violence and getting pleasure from watching the other guy squirm is not my idea of the perfect personality you claim Carl has.

And for the record, this is one girl that definitely does not want to "be with" him, and that's coming from a girl who thinks the nascar garage is overflowing with some pretty delicious eye candy haha.

I hear ya about not wantin to be with him! Here's another one.

Carl_aflac

Sara, you have listed as your favorite driver Kevin Harvick, I would think that physical violence wouldn't be an issue for you.

Becky - I'd be more afraid of DeLana. :-)

Carl is THE MAN!!! I can't wait to see him win the Championship this year! He's a comin'...

Rowdy

Junior is very underrated as far as driving talent goes. At Michigan last year there were two drivers that were truly impressive if you saw the race in person. I was sitting between turn 1 and turn 2 and lap after lap Carl and Junior would fly through there about wrecking every time. I don't know how they can do that but it was amazing to see and they were two of the fastest cars all day.

Not violence so much as false advertisement. I feel like Carl tries so hard to come off as Mr. smiles 'I just hate it for so and so' 100% of the time with his few angry incidents as just a fluke and not really a part of him. I'd appreciate the guy a lot more if he would just admit that he's not all smiles all the time.

That being said I also think there's a huge difference between in the heat of the moment yelling at someone who you think has done you wrong, and days later interrupting someone else's interview and seriously scaring them by pretending to punch them only to later play it off as oh I was only joking. It didn't look like a joke to me. (I argued myself in a circle and am back to false advertisement which means it's time to shut up)

In an attempt to somewhat bring it back to the original topic of he blog, I'm not saying Carl's a bad driver cuz I don't believe that, he's just not my cup of tea.
