Rowdy’s Take on the News:
I guess the main storylines from Saturday night’s Richmond race are pretty obvious.
1. Kyle Busch and Junior. It was a racing deal. Get over it.
2. Denny Hamlin. In his post-race comments, Denny said, “I guess God didn’t want me to win.” I didn’t realize that the Almighty had a stake in who won a car race. I guess it’s kind of reassuring to know.
3. Michael Waltrip. Everybody who is calling Kyle Busch an ass should redirect their ire towards the 55.
There is yet another story that isn’t getting a lot of attention, but might be the most noteworthy of them all. Matt Kenseth finished 38th and fell to 22nd in the standings. He is currently ranked lower than all of his teammates except for Jamie McMurray. Yes, that includes David Ragan who is just two spots out of the top12. Matt is 204 points behind Kasey Kahne in 12th which means that if Kasey took a race off and Matt won that same race, Kenseth would still be on the outside looking in. After 10 races last year, Matt was ranked third and was still Jack Roush’s undisputed lead dog. His 19 position fall from last year to this means that he has lost more positions than any other driver on the circuit.
Matt has had some bad luck. Saturday night is a good example. I guess you also have to assume that he and Chip Bolin are still adjusting to each other. Of course, there is a potential saviour right there in the Roush Fenway stable. Too bad Matt will never be able to utilize said saviour’s restorative powers.
Robbie Reiser and Matt Kenseth were as good of a team as NASCAR has ever seen. Robbie hates being a GM. Matt is sucking wind. The solution seems pretty obvious. Unfortunately, Resier and Roush are locked in a battle of wills and Roush will never give in. We’ve seen what happens when Jack Roush locks his pit bull-like jaws into something. Just look at the teeth marks he left in Team Toyota. The Cat in the Hat will never let Robbie sit atop the #17 pit box again, at least not this season. Even if it means sacrificing NASCAR’s last Winston Cup Champion...

Sure Matt's had bad luck...and I'm a big 17 fan...but seems to me his poor qualifying is catching up with him as he's finally getting caught up in the wrecks as a direct result of his pack of the pack starting position.
This season, Matt has been beat up by the bad luck bat. His poor finishes don't have anything to do with Robbie Reiser. We have seen Matt drive the doors off a POS car and finish top ten. He is an amazing race car driver and has a great team behind him but it seems his "problem" is the inability to avoid other drivers crashes.
Rusty, he wanted to spend more time at home with his children. It was Robbie's decision, so Jack promoted him.
Why did Reiser leave the pit box? What was Jack thinking? Why would he mess with a good thing? Can someone please explain?
"3. Michael Waltrip. Everybody who is calling Kyle Busch an ass should redirect their ire towards the 55."
I TOTALLY agree!! He's such a prick.
As for Matt... SIGH. He can't catch a break. I think the monkey jumped off Stremme's back and landed right on Kenseth's. I hate seeing my favorite guys have such crappy days.
Cutler, Susie so called you on your Roush-Reiser theory!!! I'll grant you I'd suspect there was some friction at the start of the year when Robbie was clearly adjusting to his new role. But if you don't think Roush is willing to pull the plug on a failed experiment (not that this is that because everybody and his brother is going out of his way to say what an awesome job Robbie is doing) look no further than his putting Osborne back with Edwards. I ain't sayin' Robbie and Matt are getting back together, but it's not that hard to see it happening.
Know what would answer my prayers?
Having Matt figure out a way to get out of his contract early, go over to RCR and take Robbie with him. Hell, Roush needs to drop a team after this year... I'd love it for Matt to drive a CHEVY! And to drive for one of the finest teams out there. Maybe not the winningest, but still one of the best. Matt and Jeff Burton were team mates before, and I think it would be a kick in the ass for Roush to have another of his high caliber drivers go over to RCR.
Look, I know it won't happen... but its a DREAM I have.
Well...gee, I guess Matt's prayers have been answered:
Robbie is anxious to do what he can, whatever that is. He stepped in and helped with the 99 when Bob Osborne was under house arrest. As we got past that, he asked, what was the next biggest problem we got' and where he could have the biggest impact is to step in and provide calmness and reason to some of the frustration on the 17 with breaking parts and having wrecks and things. Robbie is a calming force and influence on them and it's important for him to be there for a while. As time goes on, we'll decide what the term of that is — I'd guess it will be four or five weeks." -- Jack Roush
Cutler, you need to educate yourself a bit more before you go and call it quits on my boy...using words like, "never." Come on, bud. Robbie was on the 17 pit box Saturday night (or maybe behind the wall waiting...for what seems to be the inevitable this season).
Oh and by the way -- It ain't over til it's over. I do wonder how many laps the 17 has spent off the track compared to on the track during the freaking races this year...I'm sure there's a lie somewhere in that statistic too.
I'm going to put together something for the whole Kyle Busch/JR thing later, but I'm glad someone is looking at the #17.
Kenseth is not only a past champion, but the epitome of consistency. He's made a name for taking a horrid day and turning it into a solid top 10 finish. What's going on with him right now is plain scary and I'm not sure it's stopping any time soon. Unless Reiser specifically wanted off the box, I see no reason to have made that move in the 1st place and I'm with Cutler here...Robbie needs to be back on that box full time. Bad luck is bad luck, but luck isn't everything.
Jr. seemed to blow an engine every 3 or 4 races last year. It's bad luck at 1st, but then it becomes a pattern and luck is out of the equation.
1. Who isn't over it? Who wasn't over it fifteen minutes after it happened? It was as plain as a nose on a face that it was a racing deal.
2. The God reference threw me for a loop for several hours. Actually, I still don't get it.
3. Michael Waltrip. Sheesh. That was beautiful, man. Go for a walk in the woods, Ok? Stop and take a breath. You got kids around ya every week all day long. They ain't as good as you, but they got better stuff.
As a matter of fact, Robbie was "supervising" Matt's run last night and was heard on the radio after the accident ... but bad luck is bad luck. I don't think that someone who has had the success of a Jack Roush is quite as inflexible as you state. He's always been willing to try new combinations, and I think if Robbie really wanted to be on the War Wagon, that is where he would be.
Like Junior said, there's a long line of folks that would like to "chat" with Kyle. I agree that it was hard racing; the real difference is how each driver handled the situation. Kyle Busch can't help himself, he's a jackass, plain and simple. Junior is all class!
