A Rule Change for the Ages

Is Joey Logano about to get derailed? A reliable inside source tells rowdy.com that NASCAR is seriously considering raising the age limit for drivers in the Sprint Cup Series from the current 18 years of age to 21. Should the change happen, and a decision has not yet been made according to the source, the driver who comes most quickly to the mind of Rowdy listeners is phenom Joey Logano. Logano, currently with Joe Gibbs Racing, turns 18 on May 24th of this year (he's scheduled to make his Nationwide Series debut at Dover shortly afterward), and under the current rules he would be eligible for Cup duty in 2009. Presumably any change would affect the Sprint Cup series only. For more analysis listen to today's Rowdy Podcast on iTunes or at rowdy.com.

My gosh word travels fast. Once they heard I was On my way...they got scared! They know I will be a Cup Champion! So much for me making history, guess I still have more to learn. On my way...

I sure hope NASCAR has its antitrust and labor attorneys on speed-dial if they do this. The reason the NBA and NFL can do this is related to their respective collective bargaining agreements with the players. NASCAR isn't set up that way so they will be open to challenge.

I think that's a great idea. Keep the "development" drivers back in Busch, Trucks, ARCA or Heaven forbid the local short track so they can learn how to race. By race I don't mean starting from the pole in an ARCA race with Cup equipment and leading every lap. This is something NASCAR needs to seriously consider IMO

Well that little rule might put a flaw into the HoFR plans with thier boy Brad Coleman as well. Not that I disagree with the age limit, but Brad was hired to drive about 7 races this year.
