Texas is a 1.5 mile quad oval, configured like Atlanta and Charlotte with two small turns in the front stretch and 24 degrees of banking in the corners. Speed has been the theme here since we first started running here back in 1997—that year 13 guys crashed on the very first lap of the race. Since then they’ve re-paved and reconfigured the track to adjust the transition from the corners to the straights, making Texas at least a little easier to handle.
To win, drivers need a classic downforce and horsepower combination: downforce to get you through the corners and horsepower to get you out of the corners and down the straights fast.
Now even though it looks like Charlotte and Atlanta, Texas doesn’t exactly race like them. Mainly because the track is fairly new and the racing groove is pretty narrow down along the bottom of the track. That makes it pretty hard to pass, but as the track ages, the groove may be widening.
